Work and the city: how Winterthur became urban

The Museum Schaffen is a modern historical museum in the heart of the former workers' town. It focuses on people as creators and is dedicated to the topic of work in the past, present and future.

Winterthur begins to become a large city in 1922. With the incorporation of the five surrounding villages of Oberwinterthur, Seen, Töss, Veltheim and Wülflingen, the population of the then industrial city doubled overnight. With the current exhibition "Steel and smoke. 100 years of incorporation", the Museum Schaffen is taking this anniversary as an opportunity to show the heyday and decline of industry in Winterthur - as well as its consequences for the city's development. After all, it was the industrial boom that led to a rapid influx of workers, which enabled the city to grow and change. The exhibition invites visitors to trace the rocky road to incorporation, to engage with the city's (own) history and to playfully imagine visions for the future.

Together with the curators or historians, the audience explores the diverse causes and consequences of the incorporation: What role did the workers play? What was the Bodmer Plan all about? They show how urban development is shaped by work and draw a connection to the here and now.

Private guided tours are also ideal for company and team outings. A visit to the Museum Schaffen can also be wonderfully rounded off with an aperitif in the café bar.
