Kunst Museum Winterthur | Reinhart am Stadtgarten
The merger of the former Museum Oskar Reinhart and the Kunstmuseum Winterthur in 2017 resulted in the umbrella brand Kunst Museum Winterthur. The Museum Oskar Reinhart became the Kunst Museum Winterthur | Reinhart am Stadtgarten.
The Kunst Museum Winterthur | Reinhart am Stadtgarten, formerly the Museum Oskar Reinhart, was the first private museum in Switzerland when it opened in 1951. It was historically the building of the Oskar Reinhart Foundation.
The collector and patron Oskar Reinhart (1885-1965), one of Theodor Reinhart's sons, was a co-founder of the Kunstverein Winterthur. Oskar Reinhart came from a wealthy Winterthur family and shaped the city's art scene like no other. From an early age, Reinhart devoted himself entirely to building up his collection.
One thing was clear: his art treasures were to be made accessible to the general public. Oskar Reinhart's passion for art can still be felt today when you wander through the museum rooms at the Stadtgarten. The rooms, lovingly furnished with stylish furniture from the period, give the museum a private atmosphere and invite you to linger.
The 27 paintings by Ferdinand Hodler are a focal point of the collection. In addition to Swiss art, the Kunst Museum Winterthur | Reinhart am Stadtgarten also houses German and Austrian art. These include hidden art treasures such as "Chalk Cliffs on Rügen" by Caspar David, which can be admired here. Groups of works from the early Romantic and Realist periods are on permanent display, alongside other works of art from the Jakob Briner Foundation and the Briner and Kern Collection.
