5 idyllic fall hikes in the Winterthur region

The leaves glow in shades of gold and red, wafts of mist drift across the fields and the air is pleasantly cool - fall is hiking season! Whether it's a panoramic view of the Alps, culinary tours through the vineyards or idyllic lakes: the Winterthur region has everything to offer. We have put together five autumn hiking tips for you.

Around the Husemersee

The longest wine trail in the Zürcher Weinland leads along the Husemersee nature reserve - a landscape and habitat of national importance. From Ossingen train station, you can reach the lake in around 30 minutes on foot. The route leads from Ossingen, home of the Ossinger Zweigelt, to Truttikon, the origin of the Truttiker Riesling. You return to Ossingen via the vineyards and through the small hamlet of Langemoos along Lake Husemersee.

Alpine panorama on the Schauenberg

One hike, two highlights: the magnificent Alpine panorama and the remains of the 800-year-old castle ruins. The eleven-kilometre adventure trail starts at Rämismühle-Zell railroad station and leads up the Schauenberg via Gyrenbad. At the top, the remains of the walls of the medieval castle and a view that stretches from the Glarus and Central Alps across the Töss Valley to Lake Constance await. The descent through the romantic Farenbach ravine leads past numerous waterfalls. Finally, it is worth making a detour to the small town of Elgg with its pretty timber-framed houses.

Celtic circular route with the family

The new, family-friendly Celtic circular trail was opened at the end of September 2025. It leads along the Rhine bend and follows in the footsteps of the Celts, who settled on both sides of the Rhine over 2000 years ago. Ten information boards tell exciting stories about the life of the Celts and their settlements. The trail combines nature, history and culture and offers spectacular views as well as a lively insight into a fascinating civilization.
