The Journey
A Literary and Musical Journey by Lukas Bärfuss and Gwendolyn Masin
Lukas Bärfuss and Gwendolyn Masin embark on a journey to the East: Through music and text, they trace the cultural influences that have shaped Europe. The texts Bärfuss reads were gathered along the way in Minsk, Odessa, Istanbul, and Sarajevo, while Gwendolyn Masin brings her impressions to life on the violin and with a small orchestra.
This itinerary avoids the main roads; it follows the mule trails and back roads. There we find the people who were forced to leave their homes; there we hear the songs of the nomads, the melodies of the widows and orphans, and the cries of the persecuted and displaced. They tell of the rise and fall of empires, of the last morning in their old home, of the first night in a strange bed, of the borders that must be crossed, of contraband, of lost children, and of love rediscovered.
