The Servant of Two Masters

Beatrice and Florindo are betrothed. When Florindo is suspected of having killed his beloved’s brother, he flees to Venice under a false name. Beatrice follows him, disguised as a man. Both check into a boarding house unrecognized. Beatrice’s servant Truffaldino—a fool, a jester, and a devil all rolled into one—is, above all, chronically hungry. When he notices the arrival of a second traveler, he seizes the double opportunity for food and pay, becomes—secretly, of course—that traveler’s servant as well, and thereby gets into all sorts of tricky predicaments, entangling himself in ever-new lies as he juggles his dual roles.
