The House of Bernarda Alba

A play by Alice Birch, based on Federico García Lorca. For ages 16 and up.

With his final play, the Spanish poet created one of the most powerful tragedies of the 20th century. British author Alice Birch transforms this harrowing drama—centered on female oppression, thwarted desire, and violent generational conflict—into a fascinatingly contemporary stage narrative.

The door is locked. For the next eight years, none of the women is allowed to leave the house, as dictated by a tradition that mandates a mourning period of this magnitude following the death of the husband. The five daughters are in shock. Their mother, Bernarda Alba, enforces the rule relentlessly, using force if necessary. Cut off from the world and locked away with their hunger for life, their suppressed sexuality, and their longing for freedom and dignity, the young women are seized by rage. Soon they turn their pain against themselves and everyone else in the house, until disaster strikes.

“Precisely timed parallel montages, dialogues interwoven like a collage, and meticulously choreographed slow-motion scenes make this evening a magnificent, multisensory, and thought-provoking total work of art.” From the jury’s statement for the 2025 Berlin Theatertreffen.

For everyone 16 and older.
