Ballet BC, Vancouver

Three choreographies by Crystal Pite, Medhi Walerski, Bobbi Jene Smith, and Or Schraiber

Vancouver’s Ballet BC, under the artistic direction of Medhi Walerski, is considered Canada’s leading contemporary dance company. With this thrilling evening of dance, featuring three works by world-class choreographers, the company is making its debut in Winterthur.

In “Frontier,” Crystal Pite explores the unknown—the characterization of dark matter, the personification of shadows: “For me, creation means venturing into uncharted territory and trying to form a creative relationship with doubt. ‘Frontier’ is a portrait of the invisible forces that move us.” Inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem “Hope is the thing with feathers,” “SWAY” unfolds the lyrical language of movement for which Medhi Walerski is famous. Flowing, harmonious transitions between duets and ensemble passages create moments of timeless beauty—as fleeting as the hope described in the poem.

Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber are known for their intense, unexpected, and expressive creations. In “Obsidian,” all the sensual elements of dance come together, accompanied live by pianist Perri Lo.
