Photo Museum Winterthur
The Swiss Mecca of photography casts a spell over more than just die-hard fans with its images that range from art to documentation of the everyday. The Fotomuseum Winterthur provides a fascinating setting for contemporary and classic photography.
From June 2023 until spring 2025, the premises of the Fotomuseum Winterthur at Grüzenstrasse 44 will be closed due to a new building and renovation project. Despite this temporary closure, the museum will continue to engage with photography: The Fotomuseum Winterthur invites you to events, workshops and digital encounters as well as an exhibition on the premises of the Fotostiftung Schweiz in 2024. The Fotostiftung Schweiz will be open regularly throughout the construction period and will present a varied program of exhibitions, events and educational activities. The photo library run jointly by the Fotomuseum Winterthur and the Fotostiftung Schweiz will remain accessible and present exhibitions in the Passage. The jointly run Bistro George is also open and welcomes guests.
Whether fashion, architecture, industry, crafts, working life or leisure, the view through the lens leads to other worlds. With the various exhibitions at the Fotomuseum Winterthur, these worlds are not just reserved for photographers. Through works by artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, your mind will wander into the past, while the works of contemporary masters are firmly anchored in the past.
Since autumn 2003, the Fotomuseum Winterthur has joined forces with the Fotostiftung Schweiz to form a competence center for photography with an outstanding international reputation. This includes a bistro, a library, seminar rooms, a lounge and a store. Every year, the Fotomuseum Winterthur presents new selections from its extensive collection in six major exhibitions. This consists of works by countless renowned artists such as Nan Goldin, Fischli/Weiss, Robert Frank and many more.
